ALTOONA Two people were killed Monday in shootings that began with a robbery attempt at a sandwich shop, including a high school student who worked at the shop.

Police responded to an armed robbery report at the Subway in Altoona about 5 p.m. Monday, Det. Mary Hogan said early today.

One employee at the shop was killed and one was critically wounded, Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio said.

The gunman fled through a wooded area toward an apartment complex about one-quarter mile away, and a man outside the apartments also was shot and killed, police said.

A man arrested minutes later near the apartments was charged with criminal homicide and other counts, including attempted theft and terroristic threats, Consiglio said. The suspect's name wasn't immediately released.

The Subway employee killed was Scott Garlick, a high school senior, said Linda Russo, spokeswoman for the nearby Hollidaysburg School District.

MCCANDLESS A worker had to be rescued Monday afternoon after a vehicle crashed through a showroom window at Baierl Subaru in McCandless Township, Allegheny County, police said.A worker was pinned at her desk, but was rescued by emergency crews who took her to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Her name and condition were not immediately available.Police are investigating the crash, but have not said how or why it happened.
