INDIANA - A student at Indiana (Pa.) University has been shot outside an off-campus bar, and a suspect has been arrested.

Indiana Borough police arrested 20-year-old Martin Roger Boyd Jr. of Philadelphia early Friday afternoon. The victim is 21-year-old Justin McCoy of Springfield, Va.

Witnesses told police the shooting followed a confrontation between two groups. Witnesses said a member of the group that included Boyd made race-related comments about a Saudi Arabian man in McCoy's group.

McCoy was shot in the abdomen at about 2 a.m. Friday. He was listed in fair condition Friday evening at a hospital in Johnstown.

Boyd was jailed Friday evening; it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

PITTSBURGH - An Ohio-born monk has been elected bishop of the Pittsburgh archdiocese for the Orthodox Church in America.Sixty-six-year-old Bishop-elect Melchisedek is living in a monastery in Greece, but is preparing to move to Pittsburgh. He replaces Archbishop Kyrill, who died in June 2007.Melchisedek was born Thomas Pleska in Canton, Ohio, and was a broker and real estate appraiser before entering seminary.He served churches in eastern Pennsylvania and Connecticut before moving to Greece in 1998.The Orthodox Church in America has its roots in Russian Orthodoxy. It has about 100,000 members.

PITTSBURGH -The mayor of Pittsburgh wants to hire at least 500 young people at $7.25 an hour this summer to do jobs like cleaning up litter and planting flowers.Mayor Luke Ravenstahl wants to spend $1.5 million in federal economic stimulus funds and block grants for the city's Summer Youth Employment Program.The six-week summer program for city residents ages 14 to 21 runs from July 6 to Aug. 14.

PITTSBURGH - Federal workplace safety officials are working with contractors to make sure leaning support columns are fixed on a garage being built for Pittsburgh's new slot machine casino.The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says about 80 columns on the 10-story parking garage behind the planned Rivers Casino were leaning. Seven of the columns were nearly a foot out of line.OSHA began investigating in February on an anonymous tip, but efforts to fix the problem were first reported by KDKA-TV earlier this week.Casino spokesman Dan Fee says the garage remains structurally sound and safe. He says it's not uncommon to adjust floors of multilevel structures to make sure they're aligned.OSHA found problems on the seventh, eighth and ninth floors.

MONACA - A merged school district in Western Pennsylvania now has a mascot and official colors for its sports teams.Teams at the Central Valley School District in Beaver County will be the Warriors and will wear navy and Carolina blue on their uniforms.The former Center Area and Monaca school districts are officially merging July 1. The district settled on its new name in February, and a 48-member student committee picked the mascot name and colors on Tuesday.Center Areas sports teams have been known as the Trojans while Monaca's teams are called the Indians.The districts elementary schools will combine this fall, while the middle and high schools will operate separately before combining in the fall of 2010.
