PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police say a shoplifting suspect was stabbed by an off-duty officer after the suspect used a pair of handcuffs to beat the officer in the head.

Police officials are not identifying the officer involved in Sunday's incident at the Burlington Coat Factory store downtown, where the 16-year veteran was working a private security detail.

Police say the officer was trying to handcuff 59-year-old Anthony Smith for allegedly stealing some boots when Smith used the handcuffs like a set of brass knuckles and tried to grab the officer's gun.

Police Sgt. James Vogel says the officer then stabbed Smith in the abdomen with a utility knife.

Smith is in a city hospital and expected to survive. The officer is on administrative leave during the investigation.

BEAVER — A man has been ordered to stand trial in the death of a fellow hunter shot last year as his 9-year-old son sat nearby.Twenty-one-year-old Daniel Logan was held for trial on separate counts of shooting at or causing injury to a human being and reckless endangerment in the death of 35-year-old Duane Smith of Frankfort Springs. The charges were filed under the state's game law.

PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff will soon have a new place to socialize.The school expects to reopen its University Club on Wednesday after spending more than $20 million to renovate the facility built in 1923.The club will include a members-only faculty and staff club, a dining facility and cocktail lounge, a library and reading room complete with wireless Internet access, and a fitness center.The school bought the building for $3.1 million in 2005 and began renovating it in December 2007.The building will have banquet and conference rooms available for campus events, but can also be booked for weddings and other private affairs.

ERIE — A Pittsburgh man is in jail on charges he fatally shot a man during an argument outside a bar in Erie.Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk says authorities are still investigating the motive for the shooting about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.Police say 31-year-old Michael Wright of Pittsburgh was in the tavern with 31-year-old Rondell Jennings when they began arguing. Police say Wright shot Jennings when they went outside and then fled.Police say Wright was arrested Saturday evening after a traffic stop in Meadville. Police say Wright had been staying in Meadville recently.It is not clear if Wright has an attorney.

GREENSBURG — State police are investigating a crash in the parking lot of an Italian grocery store in Western Pennsylvania that killed an 80-year-old pedestrian.State police in Greensburg haven't identified the man killed Sunday morning outside DeLallo Italian Marketplace on Route 30 in Hempfield Township.Police say 82-year-old Theresa Pilkington of Jeannette lost control and hit the man with the right rear of her car as she pulled out of a handicapped parking space. The woman then hit two roof supports and three concrete planters causing part of the front of the store's roof to fall on her car.Police say the woman wasn't hurt. Police have not determined whether charges will be filed.

STATE COLLEGE — A 20-year-old student at Penn State University is being treated for what school health officials call a probable case of bacterial meningitis.A university spokeswoman says the student has been taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he is in critical condition.The student lived at a fraternity house. Fraternity members have been asked to get medical treatment as a precaution.About 40 people have been treated as of Saturday. Health officials are trying to determine anyone else who may be at risk.Meningococcal meningitis is a contagious and potentially fatal infection of the central nervous system.It is typically not transmitted by routine contact, but is spread by saliva or other close, prolonged contact with an infected person.

PITTSBURGH — A Western Pennsylvania man has been charged in the shooting deaths of two men in a van in Pittsburgh last summer.Thirty-eight-year-old Victorio Hinton of McKeesport was arraigned Saturday night on two counts of criminal homicide and one count of criminal conspiracy in the killings of Christopher Brandyburg and William Walker of Beaver Falls. Pittsburgh police say Hinton was driving the van in which they were shot July 5.Forty-two-year-old Allan Moorefield of Pittsburgh was quickly arrested and charged with homicide.But authorities say Hinton denied that Moorefield was the shooter and named another man. Moorefield's trial was scheduled to begin today but has been postponed.Hinton remains in Allegheny County Jail without bail pending a preliminary hearing Friday. It was unclear whether he has an attorney.

CLAY TOWNSHIP — Lancaster County officials say a tornado might have caused the destruction to five trailer homes in Clay Township.Dave Wiker, the county's emergency services shift supervisor, says three people suffered minor injuries Sunday afternoon but had no further details.Wiker says county officials won't know for certain if a tornado had touched down until National Weather Service officials and the county's emergency management director Randy Gockley survey the area today.Wiker says emergency service officials received damage reports just before 5 p.m.
