Woodmen of the World
Take a drive around Butler and you’ll see a lot. There is a good chance that you’ll see an American flag that was donated by the local lodge of Woodmen of the World.
Founded in 1890, Woodmen of the World have been providing life insurance and other financial services to its members in the Butler area since 1892. Woodmen of the World is much more than just an insurance company. It is a fraternal benefit society that exists for the benefit of its members. Woodmen is not your typical insurance company because it’s a fraternal benefit society that is nonprofit, and is member-owned and operated.
The Woodmen Lodge in Butler gives back to the community in many ways. One of the most noticeable ways is by donating American flags to nonprofit organizations. Woodmen of the World is one of the largest donators of flags in the country.
You have probably noticed some of the donated American flags and flag poles at the many fire stations around Butler County, or at the American Legion in Chicora, or at some of the other places around the community. In fact, this year the Butler Lodge will be donating an American flag and flagpole to the 911 Center in Butler.
But the Woodmen Lodge in Butler does more for the community than just donating flags. On the second Friday of every month, the lodge gets together and plans different events for the community. These events range from fingerprinting children at the Butler Farm Show to planning garage sales to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The lodge also gives back to the community by donating books to libraries and dedicating flags and flag poles to Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
But the members of the Butler lodge have fun, too. They hold social activities such as ice cream socials and bowling nights.
This past year, the Butler lodge adopted St. Wendelin School and has been working with it to gather items to send the U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq. Woodmen also participate in Join Hands Day by partnering with another organization in the community to provide a community service.
The Butler lodge gives history awards to students who excel, and for members for who really excel Woodmen offers the opportunity to receive scholarships to continue their education.
Members of Woodmen of the World have many exciting benefits to take advantage of. One of the best-kept secrets of being a Woodmen member is the summer youth and senior camps. Every year, youth and senior members have the opportunity to go the Woodmen camp and participate in various activities.
