The C.W. Howard Insurance Agency, 405 W. Jefferson St., Butler, was started more than 58 years ago as a dream of Clarence W. “Shag” Howard.

With a strong spiritual foundation, loving support of his wife, Leona and a commitment to hard work, high ethical standards and personal integrity, Shag believed that by serving others through the insurance business it would enable him to earn a respectable income, help people and contribute positively to the community.

Shag understood the need to build strong foundational roots in business and in his community. He was a proud member of many charitable community boards and was always eager to mentor and encourage others to succeed.

By developing his vision of personal service to customers and community, Shag forged a mission and business culture that emphasized the value of family and eduction. His son, David C. Howard, who graduated as a CPA, later joined his father in the insurance business to continue Shag’s personal legacy of service to customers and community. His daughter, Jocelyn Howard Sinopoli also joined the family business after teaching in Butler School District for over 20 years.

As you can see, insurance has never been just a job at the C.W. Howard Insurance Agency. Now in its 3rd generation, the agency continues to emphasize Shag’s personal commitment of service to customers and community. Jocelyn, president of C.W. Howard Insurance Agency, has served on numerous charitable boards and is a member of the Butler PM Rotary, is on the Foundation Board of the Butler County Community College and is chair of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. Jeffrey Howard, David’s son, and Elisabeth Howard Sommers, David’s daughter, are also an essential part of a team of 15 insurance professionals, who value each customer and are committed to continue Shag’s legacy of valuing people over profits.

Shag began, David maintained, and now Jocelyn continues to emphasize the strong relationship of business and community.
