Whether it's a regular season dual meet in January, the WPIAL championships or the state finals, Heath Calhoun keeps things in perspective.

That attitude will come in handy on Saturday, when the Butler junior appears at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium, the site of the PIAA Class AAA boys diving championships.

Calhoun placed second at the WPIAL event last month and enters the state meet seeded second with a score of 518.95.

He placed fifth at states last year.

"I rarely get nervous," said Calhoun. "But I was for the first few dives at last year's state meet. That place was packed.

"I think it will help me the fact that I was there last year," he added. "I'd like to finish second this time, but as long as I have fun, I'll be happy."

Calhoun is coming off a stellar effort at the WPIAL meet.

"I thought Heath performed great," said Butler diving coach Ken Bedford. "It was one of his best meets this year and I was pleased with it."

The only diver to finish ahead of Calhoun at WPIALs, and, therefore, the only one seeded ahead of him at states, was North Allegheny sophomore Connor Kuremsky (560.2).

A little more than 40 points separate Kuremsky and Calhoun, and the latter is nearly 30 points better than No. 3 seed Ryan Koter of Franklin Regional, meaning the WPIAL can claim the top three divers entering states.

"The WPIAL is very strong this year," said Bedford. "It is not impossible for the WPIAL to take the top three spots this weekend."

Seneca Valley senior Dan Gutmann will finish his high school career by swimming two events: the 50-yard freestyle, in which he's seeded 14th with a time of 21.61 seconds, and the 100 freestyle (15th, 47.57).

Mark Newell of Center Township has made his presence felt as a freshman for Central Catholic's boys team.

He is ranked 20th in the 200 individual medley (1:58.37) and 29th in the 500 freestyle (4:49.27).

He also swims the butterfly leg of the Vikings' 200 medley relay, which is seeded 11th at 1:36.95.

"I was hoping that I could get to states in three events, but wasn't too optimistic at the beginning of the season," said Newell. "The 200 IM is my best event and I want to get to 1:56 at states."

Girls

The Seneca Valley girls are sending two individual swimmers to PIAAs: sophomore Abby Myers and junior Julie Titley.

Myers is seeded fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.98) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:52.54) after placing second in both at WPIALs.

Titley is 23rd in the 500 freestyle (5:10.83) and 25th in the 200 freestyle (1:56.23).

Both swimmers are on the Raiders' 400 freestyle relay team with Makena Lynch and Angela Panza.

The Class AAA swimming championships will be held Friday and Saturday.
