Dorothy Lou Checkan
Dorothy Lou Checkan, 70, of Mars died Wednesday at her home after an illness.
Born in Butler on June 29, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Austin and Helen Matilda Covert Mills.
She and her husband were owners of the Checkan Refuge Co. in Mars for many years.
She was an avid bowler, having bowled with the Moose and several other leagues at Mars Lanes.
She was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Evans City.
Surviving are a daughter, Sherry Charlier of Evans City; a son, Gary Checkan of Ellwood City; two sisters, Mrs. Art (Ella) Jordan of Butler and Florida and Fran Jordan of Butler; and a sister-in-law, Noelene Mills. Also surviving are five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Edward Checkan, who she married Oct. 13, 1959; a brother, Bud Mills; and a sister, Mary Helen Waring.
