Heading to the big show
SLIPPERY ROCK — Freeport graduate Lacy Cochran is one of four Slippery Rock University indoor track and field athletes headed to the NCAA Division II National Championships. The national meet runs March 13 and 14 at the University of Houston. Cochran posted a school-record time of 57.38 seconds in the 400 meters at the PSAC Championships and is seeded 13th at nationals. Other SRU athletes headed to nationals are Whitney Hendershot in the women's high jump, Jenn Harpp in the 5,000 meters and Jeff Weiss in the men's mile. Hendershot leads the nation with a jump of 5 feet, 9Z\v inches. Harpp has the second-fastest time nationally in the 5,000 and Weiss owns the school record with a time of 4:10.53 in the mile. Baseball Matt Adams had five hits and four RBI Monday in leading SRU to a doubleheader split against East Stroudsburg in Florida. East Stroudsburg won the first game, 10-7. Adams had a double and three RBI in a 5-2 Rock victory in Game 2. Vince Lloyd struck out 10 in a complete-game effort in Game 2. SRU (6-2) plays West Chester in a doubleheader today. Adams was named PSAC West Player of the Week for last week, hitting .520 (13-for- 25) with four doubles, four homers and 14 RBI. Softball SRU opened its season Monday with a pair of wins, defeating Franklin College 6-1 and shutting out Chestnut Hill 3-0. Shauna Walker allowed three hits in getting the victory over Franklin. Jessica Kortz had a home run, a double and two runs scored. Lisa Getgen pitched a two-hit shutout vs. Chestnut Hill, striking out 11. Courtney Vincent had three hits and four stolen bases. Knoch graduate Kirsten Brant had a hit and two RBI. Women's Tennis The Rock's 29th-ranked squad blanked King's College of Tennessee, 9-0, Monday and nipped Lake Superior State, 5-4, Tuesday. SRU (8-1) snapped a tie in the latter match as junior Casey Runyan scored a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles. Senior Kayla Blackburn won four matches in the last two days, giving her 167 career victories, second-most in school history. She trails Jessica Bungo by 10 wins for the top spot. Field Hockey The Rock finished second in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II National Academic Team competition with a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.49. Kutztown won the competition with a 3.51. SRU team members named to the national academic squad include Ashley Adams, Samantha Badaczewski, Lindsay Bisking, Skylar Brosse, Jessica Cartwright, Rebecca Coleman, Teresa Elliott, Allie Hartman, Jordan Hausladen, Erin Moran, Brittany Schultz, Jenna Stine, Stephanie Sylvia and Jennifer Venet.
