John H. Brown, 85, of Cranberry Township, formally of Portersville, peacefully passed away Thursday evening at UPMC Passavant in the North Hills following an illness.

Born April 14, 1923, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of John Henry and Catherine McMonagle Brown.

Mr. Brown, founder of John Brown Trucking of Portersville, retired after 43 years as the owner and operator of his trucking business.

He belonged to the Northway Christian Community Church in Wexford, where he and his wife served on the welcoming committee.

Mr. Brown was an Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Portersville-Prospect Rotary Club since 1967, where he served as club president from 1974 to 1975 and also from 1987 to 1988, served on many fundraising committees, and received his Paul-Harris Fellow award in 1988.

Mr. Brown was a member of the Ellwood Lodge 599, the F. & A.M. of Ellwood City and the Operating Engineers of Pittsburgh.

He enjoyed golfing and traveling.

John H. Brown is survived by his wife, Sondra T. Brown, whom he married Dec. 1, 1997; four children, Linda Dickson and her husband, Walter, of Ellwood City, Ellen Simoff and her husband, Ted, of Harmony, Harold Brown and his wife, Gretchen, of Portersville, and Dr. Joan Brown-Levine and her husband, Dr. Bruce Levine, of Dunedin, Fla.; and two stepchildren, Thomas E. Croftcheck and his wife, Cindy, of Pittsburgh and Tammy Croftcheck Parey of Cranberry Township.

He is survived by many grandchildren, Candace Conner, R.J. and Jarrett Dickson, Meredith Ward, Laura Hofmann, Gregory Simoff, Steven Brown, Laurie Tomak, Amy Arrigo, Aaron Levine, Mariel Levine, Gianna, Nicholas, Rachelle, Regina, Michael, and T.J. Gresko, Dylan Croftcheck, and James Michael Parey; and eight great-grandchildren, Tayler Conner, Neleah Ward, Grace Marie Hofmann, Hannah Gresko, Emma Arrigo, Alex, Katie, and Tanner Tomak. He also is survived by two sisters, Marie Brown and Margaret Brown Shields, both residents of Orchard Manor in Grove City.

He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Terry Lynn Gresko.

<B>BROWN</B> — Visitation for John H. Brown, who died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the <B>Glenn-Kildoo Funeral Home and Cremation Services</B>, 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Township.The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Scott McCabe, his church pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Cranberry Township.Arrangements are entrusted to the <B>Edward L.
