PITTSBURGH — Two second-place finishes, a ticket punched to the PIAA Class AAA championships and a school record.

That's what Seneca Valley's Abby Myers did with her Thursday afternoon at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.

The sophomore's day started with the 200-yard freestyle, an event in which she was the top seed.

Though she placed second behind Bethel Park's Becca Zimmer, her time of one minute, 52.54 seconds is the best ever by a Seneca Valley female swimmer.

The previous mark was held by Rose Snyder (1:52.8).

"I figured it would come down to me and Becca," Myers said of the 200 free event. "She's really good."

In the last individual event of the day, Myers took second in the 100 butterfly at 56.98.

She won the event last year with a slower time (57.39).

"My time was all right, but I would like to have gone a bit faster," Myers said.

SV coach Tom Donati was pleased with Myers' performance.

"Going to states in two events, the school record ... it's hard to come in here and not be pumped up," he said. "But the ultimate goal is to go to Bucknell (University) and get faster at the state meet.

Also headed to the PIAA event is SV senior Dan Gutmann, who placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.61.

His previous best was 22.8 and he entered Thursday seeded 10th.

"Dan was just awesome," said Donati. "I was a bit concerned coming in because turns aren't his strength. But he earned it."

"I was really excited to get third, but there's still room to move up," Gutmann said.

Gutmann also helped SV's boys 200 freestyle relay squad place seventh at 1:30.23. That team included Anthony Geyer, Eric Peirce and Justin Pritchard.

SV's girls also saw Julie Titley place eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.23) and Leah Patinski was ninth in the 100 butterfly (59.81).

of Erik Bergh, Matt Goettler, Jason Clouse and Alex Bauer was 15th with a time of 1:45.83.

"They took four and a half seconds off their time," said Butler coach Dacia Como. "That was awesome. And most of the boys had better times in the individual events."

The WPIAL Class AAA championships will continue today from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
