NEW CASTLE, Schuylkill County — Authorities said a man drowned and his stepfather died of an apparent heart attack while rescuing a child from a frozen pond in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Divers recovered the body of Willard Roy Van Fleet Jr., 36, after a three-hour search in North Abington Township, Schuylkill County, on Saturday. Officials said Mark Keene, 55, died after collapsing on the ice.

Police said two young girls had been playing near the water when one fell in. At some point, police said Van Fleet's girlfriend also fell or jumped into the water.

The men stretched a ladder onto the ice in an attempted rescue. Police said Van Fleet jumped in while Keene held the ladder in place.

Van Fleet helped his girlfriend and the girl out of the water, but then disappeared below the surface.

SOMERSET — A Pennsylvania company that makes respirator therapy devices is laying off 46 employees as it moves manufacturing jobs to China.DeVilbiss Healthcare's chief financial officer Larry Price said Friday the layoffs are among the 80 announced in 2007.The company announced then it was moving some production to China where labor costs are lower.About 150 people are employed by DeVilbiss in Somerset.Price said declining government reimbursements for respiratory medical products also pressured the company to reduce product costs.

DETROIT — Whatever landlubbers think of it, a white and wet winter has been good to the Great Lakes.A Detroit newspaper reported today the latest estimates from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows lake levels are higher in February than the year before for the second year in a row. The lakes had been declining for most of the past decade.Statistics for January show Lake Superior is two inches higher than last year, St. Clair is one foot higher, Erie is four inches higher and Ontario is eight inches higher. The Lake Michigan-Huron system is one foot higher.Still, the Army Corps' projects water levels by July could be inches below where they were a year earlier. That's because of high levels of rain in late spring and early summer last year.
