WEXFORD — There's no need to call Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.

That's because the Seneca Valley boys basketball team is successfully playing the role of 'Ghostbusters'.

The program's first-ever section title came earlier this month.

And up until their WPIAL Quad A playoff opener against Fox Chapel Feb. 13, the Raiders had never won a first-round postseason game.

They defeated the Foxes at North Hills High, a venue at which the team rarely succeeds.

On Saturday in the district quarterfinals, SV faced Upper St. Clair, which had ended the Raiders' 2007-08 season by beating them in the playoffs.

This time around, the Raiders rolled to a decisive 60-42 win, sending the team to the WPIAL semifinals against Peters Township. That game will be played at 8 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny.

In short, if there are any ghosts from SV's past, they are being banished like the team's opponents.

"Just like our game against Fox Chapel, we knew we were going to win today," said Raiders' coach Vic Giannotta.

The only thing more brash than the Raiders' attitude has been their play.

The Raiders jumped on the Panthers, leading 17-7 after one quarter.

SV's edge grew to 27-12 in the second period before USC mounted a 7-0 run to close the half down 27-19.

But any momentum the Panthers (17-7) carried with them into halftime was left there as USC never got closer than seven points in the second half.

Pete Serio's 3-pointer brought the Panthers to within 29-22 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter, but the Raiders (16-7) went on a 7-2 run by the time the period expired, highlighted by C.J. Brown's conventional 3-point play with 13.4 seconds on the clock.

The Panthers and their fans were banking on a run that never came, as the Raiders stepped on the gas in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 46-29 after consecutive buckets from Brown and Christian Durbin, the latter coming with 4:53 left to play.

"We could tell (the Panthers) were getting tired, with their hands on their hips," said Brown. "That's when you want to hit a team, when they're down."

And Brown certainly did his part, scoring a team-high 23 points, including seven points in that dominating first quarter.

"C.J. was the difference in the game, absolutely," said USC coach Danny Holzer. "We knew that we would have to contain him today, but he was just too much for us."

Christian Durbin tallied 18 points to add balance to the Raiders' offense, but SV's defense also played very well.

The Raiders have given up 80 points in two playoff games.

"We've played a lot of zone this year, some half-court and full-court traps," said Giannotta. "But when it comes to the playoffs, you have to be able to play half-court man and we did.

"I thought (Dustin) Anewalt and (Nate) Herrmann played great defense today," added Giannotta.

The Panthers were led by Christian Shea's 15 points.
