CHERRY TWP — Moniteau High guard Tyler Armagost dribbled to his right, spun to his left, absorbed contact from two Brookville players and crumpled to the floor in a heap.

Time after time, that scene played out Tuesday night. And, time after time, a whistle echoed throughout the gym and Armagost set his toe to the foul line.

It wasn't exactly the plan, but it worked as the Warriors toppled the Raiders 59-50 in the first round of the District 9 Class AA boys basketball playoffs.

"It wasn't (the plan) at first," Armagost said. "But I knew I could get a foul every time. Our game plan was to take it to them, but not quite like that."

As the quarterback on the Armagost is used to taking contact.

Tuesday night, he took his fair share in the paint against Brookville on the way to 18 points, including an 8-of-12 effort from the free-throw line.

Moniteau (10-12) took 31 foul shots in the game and made 65 percent.

It was the difference in the game.

"We were trying to get the ball inside," said Moniteau coachRandy Armagost. "It's playoff time. From the outside, if you are on, you'll win. But if you're off, you go down the drain with the 3s."

Brookville (3-18) was in constant foul trouble. Jared Heschle, a 6-foot-4 sophomore center, picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter. Junior forward Chad Brocious fouled out in the fourth.

Turnovers also plagued Brookville. The Bulldogs coughed up possession 25 times, leading to 22 Moniteau points.

But Brookville hung close with Moniteau throughout.

Zach McCormick gave the Warriors a big lift before halftime with an arching 3-point shot at the buzzer to turn what would have been a slim four-point lead into a 32-25 advantage at intermission.

Moniteau built a pair of 10-point leads in the second half, only to watch Brookville chip away at them.

The Warriors led by as many as 11 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Brookville, which closed the season on an 11-game losing skid, was 2-of-10 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.

It was a big playoff win for Moniteau, a team that is scarce on playoff experience.

"I am the only one on the team to play in a playoff game," Tyler Armagost said. "It was important to get in here and get this win to give the younger guys a taste of playoff basketball."

Kyle Armagost finished with 17 points and ZachSloan added 11 points and 16 rebounds for Moniteau, which will take on Brockway at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Clarion University.
