PHILADELPHIA — Two University of Pennsylvania students hospitalized with meningitis have been upgraded to fair condition and a third has improved to good condition, the school said Monday.

No new cases of the potentially fatal illness have been reported, despite two other students being hospitalized with flu-like symptoms over the weekend, Penn spokeswoman Phyllis Holtzman said.

The three students contracted the contagious infection earlier this month and at least two of them became critically ill.

Penn officials believe the three are linked through fraternity and sorority events. Meningococcal infections can be spread through kissing, sharing utensils and other close contact.

About 3,000 students have received antibiotics as a precaution since the first case was publicly reported last week. Penn has about 10,000 full-time undergraduates.

The Ivy League school in Philadelphia canceled all official university and student-sponsored parties over the weekend. On Monday, classes and campus events resumed and the university sponsored another health clinic event offering preventive treatment.
