Workshop focuses on farm estate planning

An estate planning workshop is set for 1 p.m. March 3 at the Farm Service Agency in Connoquenessing Township.

Dennis Hall, division chief for economic development, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, will conduct the workshop and answer important questions regarding estate planning.

The session will deal with many aspects of estate planning and farm transitions.

The key objectives for the 45 minute session are:

n What do you want to see happen?

• What ideas on property and asset disposition are to be considered?

• How important is death tax and estate settlement cost saving?

• What steps should be taken to assure the continuation of the farm operation?

Estate planning for farmers is unique.

Farmers often have an emotional commitment and an attachment to their farms and land.

Farm families have often lived on the same property for generations, looking at farming as a way of life, not just a business.

Planning is essential for the future of farming in Pennsylvania. Planning takes time and requires tough choices.

Farmers should know what options are available to them. They share a common concern about taxes and also a loss of the value of their property after they pass away.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Center for Farm Transitions assists farmers in getting started, making changes or transitioning their assets to retire.

Now is the time to start estate planning. To register and reserve a seat, contact the Butler County Conservation District at 724-284-5270.

Ron Fodor is district manager of the Butler County Conservation District.
