Shady Side Academy had no answer for either as Seneca Valley posted a 52-44 boys basketball victory Saturday in the Indians' gym.

The win was the fifth in six games for the Raiders (12-6, 7-3) who can claim the first section title in the program's history with wins over North Allegheny and Butler this week.

"We've been to the playoffs the past two years and this program has never won more than seven section games in a season," SV coach Vic Giannotta said. "You can't just stop and be satisfied, though.

"The ultimate goal of any program is to win a championship."

Rohm scored 18 of the Raiders' first 32 points Saturday, his points coming on six treys. The final one gave his team a 32-24 lead with 39 seconds left in the third quarter.

Brown scored eight of his 13 points in the second half. No other Seneca Valley player reached double figures.

"We're usually more balanced than this, but that's OK,"Giannotta said. "This was a trap game and we found a way to beat a good team on the road."

Class AA Shady Side Academy (11-8, 8-2) has lost to only three double-Ateams all seasopn.

"We schedule as many non-section games against Quad-A teams as we can,"Indians coach Terence Parham said. "There's no better way to get ready for the playoffs than to face that kind of competition.

"Those guys were in our face all day. That's what we want."

Shady Side Academy will finish second to Jeannette in Section 4-AA.

Defensively, Parham found little fault with his team's performance.

"Our goal every game is to hold the opponent under 50 points,"he said. "We weren't far off that today. Offensively, we struggled.

"When we came out to get the Rohm kid, C.J. hurt us by cutting to the basket. They did a good job of taking what was there."

Eddie Sheerer paced Shady Side Academy with 12 points, all in the second half. Jerome Barnes added 11 points and five rebounds, Billy Nickel eight points and seven boards.

Seneca Valley held a 32-22 rebounding edge. Brown grabbed 11 boards and Evan Mitro six.

The Raiders trailed 17-10 with 4:58 left in the second quarter before closing out the first half with a 13-1 run.

Shady Side Academy closed within 35-31 with 5:41 left in the game before SVput together an 8-1 run to put the game away.

"Those two stretches killed us,"Parham said.

"We play possession by possession,"Giannotta said. "We had those runs because our kids focused and played good ball during that time. I don't think we played focused for the whole game."

AJerome Barnes 3-pointer — the Indians' seventh trey of the day — pulled Shady Side within 50-44 with 18.5 seconds to play. But SV's Joe Belechak sank two free throws with 17.3 ticks on the clock to thwart any comeback ideas.

Seneca Valley had just one turnover in the fourth quarter while sealing the victory.

Beau Barclay sank a free throw with 7.1 seconds left in the junior varsity game, giving the Raiders a 38-37 triumph.
