READING — It wasn't the snow, the sleet or the freezing rain: This mail carrier had to rescue the mail after his delivery truck caught fire.

Investigators say the electrical fire apparently started in the dashboard while the truck was making deliveries outside Reading in Berks County.

Cumru Township fire Chief Scott Brady says the letter carrier saw smoke coming out of his truck, got out and called 911.

Then he got all the mail out before the truck was completely engulfed in flames.

The fire was out in several minutes and the driver, whose name was not released, wasn't hurt. There is no word on what caused the blaze.

PITTSBURGH — Three people are charged in a scam to steal tickets to popular concerts and stage shows at a performing arts venue and then resell them on the Internet.Vaughn Davis, 50; his fiancee, Madge Hayes, of Pittsburgh; and their friend, Robert Patrick Conderato, 38, of Munhall, have been arraigned on theft and computer crimes that victimized the Benedum Center and its patrons, state investigators said.Before he was charged, Davis worked at the theater taking credit card orders over the phone. Authorities said he used his position to intercept tickets to popular shows like "The Lion King" and have Hayes resell them through Craigslist and other Web sites. Conderato helped deliver the tickets and split the money, the state attorney general's office said Wednesday.Hayes and Davis are also accused of using customer credit card numbers to buy other theater tickets for selling online.The investigation began in when someone who bought tickets from Davis was refused entry to a show because the tickets had been reported missing by the original buyer. The customer reported the problem to police in the Pittsburgh suburb of Franklin Park and the attorney general's office began investigating in February.

NORTH EAST — A college in northwestern Pennsylvania is scrapping its annual Fourth of July fireworks show and will instead use the money to offer students more financial aid.Mercyhurst College officials are making the decision because of the economic crisis.The private, Catholic school is based in Erie, but sponsors the fireworks at its satellite campus in North East, a borough along Lake Erie's southern shore.The school says it spends more than $32,000 on the fireworks each year.

SHARON — A Marine from Western Pennsylvania has been killed in Afghanistan.Carol Wallace says her son, 25-year-old Sgt. David Wallace, of Sharpsville, was killed by an improvised explosive device Tuesday in the Helmud Province.The Department of Defense says 23-year-old Sgt. Trevor J. Johnson, 23, of Forsyth, Mont., also was killed. Both were assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.Wallace says her son was a combat engineer whose duties included removing and exploding bombs, conducting searches, working on vehicles and construction projects.
