Carnegie exhibit goes south of the border

An exhibit dedicated to the work of Fernando Romero and his Mexico City-based practice Laboratory of Architecture will be displayed Feb. 28 to May 31 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH — The first monographic exhibition dedicated to the work of Fernando Romero and his Mexico City¿based practice Laboratory of Architecture will be on view Feb. 28 to May 31 in the Heinz Architectural Center at Carnegie Museum of Art, 4400 Forbes Ave.

The exhibit presents innovative designs for two dozen projects together with large-scale photographs and analysis of Mexico City that help to situate the work in context.

Educated at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, Romero worked from 1997 to 2000 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, for Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture, where he was project leader for the Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal, completed 2005.

In 1999, Romero established Laboratorio de la Ciudad de México in Mexico City as an architectural practice, a studio to investigate urban phenomena, and an organizer of cultural events.

Romero's principal architectural activities are now carried out through Laboratory of Architecture.

Visitors to Laboratory of Architecture/Fernando Romero will first encounter a sequence of projected images of Mexico City, one of the world's most populous conurbations, by photographer Adam Wiseman, together with still images by photographer Pablo Lopez of sites where Romero is working.

Visitors will proceed to adjacent galleries to discover products of the architect's investigation and thought process. Models of two dozen projects are gathered into four categories: orthogonal, nonorthogonal, organic and communal.

An architect's lecture and opening reception is planned for Feb. 27. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the reception.
