PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Health has cited a Pittsburgh hospital where an 89-year-old dementia patient died after wandering onto the roof where she spent the night in December.

The citations detailed in a 22-page report carry no penalty against UPMC Montefiore hospital, but they require it to take corrective action. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center says it is already doing that.

State inspectors found that hospital officials knew Rose Lee Diggs was prone to wander from her room on the 12th floor of the hospital, but they didn't have a plan to ensure her safety.

She disappeared about 5 p.m. Dec. 2 and wasn't found until about 8 a.m. the next day.

RUSSELLTON — A Pittsburgh-area gymnasium has been transfigured into the new home of a parish whose church burned down nearly three years ago.Transfiguration Church in West Deer burned down during a Thursday morning service in June 2006. The Pittsburgh diocese opted not to rebuild the church, saying it would be too expensive for the tiny, cash-strapped congregation. So the church decided to renovate its now-closed school gymnasium into a new sanctuary that holds 350. The $135,000 renovation is about one-tenth as much as estimates for a new church. Some items have been salvaged from the burning church, including the baptismal font.
