PITTSBURGH — The transit agency building a light rail tunnel under Pittsburgh's Allegheny River says work will stop without money from President Barack Obama's proposed $825 billion stimulus package.

The tunnel project will extend the Port Authority of Allegheny County's 25-mile light rail from downtown to the neighborhood where Heinz Field, PNC Park and a planned slots casino are located.

Transit officials say rising construction costs have added $118 million to its $435 million price tag.

PITTSBURGH — The four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh have set an attendance record with 1.19 million guests last year.The largest attendance increases were at the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, which both featured major exhibits. The museum of art benefited from the Carnegie International and "Life on Mars" exhibits, while the history museum was boosted by the final phase of the "Dinosaurs In Their Time" exhibit.

STATE COLLEGE — Applications to attend Penn State University are up.School president Graham Spanier told university trustees that applications for enrollment are still coming in at a record pace, up more than 5 percent from last year across the Penn State system.Graduate applications are up, too, at more than 6 percent.Those estimates come as the university continues to deal with the impact of the recession.
