PHILADELPHIA — Former state Sen. Vincent Fumo was to spend a second night in the cardiac unit of a hospital where he was taken from federal court after reporting dizziness and shortness of breath during his corruption trial.

Fumo was listed in fair condition and described as "resting comfortably" Friday afternoon at Hahnemann University Hospital. "He will remain at Hahnemann overnight for continued observation," hospital spokeswoman Coleen Cannon said in a statement.

Cannon declined further comment on his condition, but said earlier that he was admitted to the cardiac unit to monitor heart rhythm irregularities and was to have more cardiac tests Friday.

According to the hospital, Fumo "experienced chest pain, racing heart beat, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea" while in court Thursday afternoon.

Fumo's health problems in recent months have included a heart attack in March and an apparent dizzy spell in June that caused him to collapse on the Senate floor.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Zauzmer said Friday the trial was still scheduled to resume Monday. Fumo's attorney, Dennis Cogan, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Fumo is charged with 139 corruption, obstruction and tax charges.
