Phoebe LaVerne (Mark) Gallagher, 88, died Dec. 14 in Bothell, Wash.

Born July 7, 1920, in DuBois, she lived most of her life in Butler before retiring to Leesburg, Fla. She lived the final eight years of her life in Bothell, near Seattle.

Phoebe lived a long and memorable life. She was a housewife and devoted mother, and a fashion model before attending North Hills Passavant Hospital nursing school to get her LPN degree.

During her nursing career, she worked at Passavant Hospital, the Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center, in the office of Butler ophthalmologist James Brown and as a private duty nurse for Charles Heinz of Pittsburgh.

She was a member of Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church in Butler for 30 years, serving as a deacon, elder and choir member. Phoebe was one of the first female presidents of the Butler Fellowship of Churches.

She will be remembered for her strong faith, her devoted service to others, her caring and generosity, and for the love she had for everyone she met.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Edward L. Gallagher Sr.; two sons, Edward (Linda) Gallagher Jr. of Calabash, N.C., and Alan (Susan) Gallagher of Fairview, Texas; a daughter, Janet (Thomas) Brookshire of Bothell, Wash.; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara A. Gallagher of Butler; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many loving extended-family members and friends.
