This letter is in response to Laura Flynn's spiteful letter to the editor on January 17th. You are complaining about emergency personel not coming out of their warm houses for calls to help your neighbors. I want to ask you this....when was the last time YOU got out of YOUR warm house to go and help one of YOUR neighbors? These are volunteer services...I am SURE that if you were to ask...you would be more than welcome to join the NWVFD. In my experiences, volunteer services are ALWAYS looking for more help! Then YOU could invest the countless hours of training, spend the many hours away from your family (holidays, dinner time, time with friends), and try to raise the hundreds of thousands of dollars it takes to run a volunteer service a year. When YOU have contributed to YOUR community in that way...then you may have a right to complain. Until that happens...you need to appreciate the people that do. Because if it weren't for these people there would be no NWVFD or any other volunteer service in this county. Whether you support them or not...others in YOUR community support them and need them. You know what they say about walking a mile in someone else's shoes! I truly hope that neither you or anyone in your family ever needs any of these services...but it is nice to know that when you need them...they are there...even if it takes a few extra minutes because you live in a rural area. I believe it's better than NO ONE showing up at all!
