SLIPPERY ROCK — Nothing could go wrong for the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team.

Inside shots, midrange jumpers, 3-point bombs all found their mark.

The defense was stifling and forcing turnovers. The fast break moved like a runaway train. Passes were crisp and right on the mark.

All was good for the Rockets (10-4, 6-0) against rival Grove City Thursday night in an 81-45 rout.

"This is definitely what any coach would want," said Rockets coach Adrienne Orris. "This is what we want Slippery Rock basketball to look like."

While Orris enjoyed the show, for Grove City coach T.L. Eller, it was like watching a horror movie long on gore.

Sixteen seconds into the game, Grove City (3-11, 1-5) led 3-0. That was as good as it got for the Eagles.

Five minutes later, it was 14-3 Slippery Rock. After two more minutes had passed, the score was 24-6.

The Rockets shot 11-of-13 from the field in the first quarter and a scintillating 19-of-25 in the first half.

"They're obviously a very good basketball team," Eller said. "They are just better than we are at every position. When they are on, they are on."

Everyone was on for the Rockets Thursday night.

Kourtney Rhoads scored 17 points in the first half, but didn't lead SlipperyRock in scoring.

That honor belonged to twin sister Karly Rhoads, who didn't start the game because of fatigue and a nagging injury, and finished with a career-high 31 points on 13-of-16 shooting.

Ali Doyle, playing with an injured jaw that has put her on a liquid diet for the next two weeks, was 5-of-5 shooting and scored 12 points in limited action.

But the Rhoads twins were in sharpshooting form.

"If one of them is on, we're good," Orris said. "When both of them are on, we're tough to beat."

Just ask Grove City.

Slow starts have wrecked the Eagles lately, and Thursday night was no different.

"I think it's just a young team being intimidated by what they see," Eller said. "Once they warm up and get over that, we seem to play a little better."

It was a tough night for Caitlin McNamara. The junior guard did score 19 points for the Eagles, but none of them were easy.

McNamara was just 7-of-24 from the field and had multiple hands in her face whenever she received the ball.

LexiCaporali took a little pressure off of McNamara, scoring 10 points for Grove City.

Eller did see some positives on a night that started with so many negatives.

"At least we kept executing," Eller said. "At least we can use this as a learning experience."

Meanwhile, Orris was pleased with the scoring punch from her team.

Slippery Rock shot 60 percent from the field and cracked the rare 80-point barrier. Jence Rhoads-led teams never accomplished that when the Vanderbilt star was wearing a Rockets jersey.

"We're shooting the ball real well right now," Orris said. "I'm always proud of my teams for winning and I'm always proud of my teams for playing hard, but the thing I'm proud of the most is having a team of unselfish basketball players. I want a team that shares the ball and is excited when everyone scores.We did that well on Monday (and Thursday.)"
