HARRISBURG — A former Pennsylvania state senator currently on trial in federal court is on track to collect more than $8,400 a month in state pension benefits.

The state pension system recently approved the request for benefits from Vincent Fumo, a Philadelphia Democrat who decided not to seek re-election last year.

Fumo's benefits were accrued over more than 30 years as a senator and six years as a state government employee.

If he's convicted, he could lose some of those benefits but wouldn't forfeit what he contributed over the years.

MEADVILLE — A 19-year-old northwestern Pennsylvania woman has been jailed because police say she left her 1-year-old child alone for more than three hours while she used a computer and talked on the phone elsewhere.Pamela Darnley, of Meadville, faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 22 on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child on Monday. State police say a maintenance worker found the baby in a crib when he arrived to fix something at her apartment about 3 p.m.Police say Darnley used a computer at the apartment complex's community center and the phone at a friend's house while the baby was alone.Police say she was surfing the Internet and checking e-mail.The baby is in Crawford County custody.

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Department of Health says there are increases in the number of reported cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia.Although Pennsylvania's rate is below the national average, the number of new cases rose in 2007, the most recent year for which figures are available. The state said Wednesday that gonorrhea is up 10 percent and chlamydia up 7 percent.Those infected with chlamydia may not show symptoms, so the state says regular testing is important.
