"It felt like it wasn't happening."

That's how Mars senior guard-forward Lily Grenci described the feeling when Thursday's girls basketball game against Kittanning was momentarily stopped after she broke the program's career scoring record.

Grenci's 23 points in a 48-26 home win over the Wildcats give her 1,178 for her career.

Becky Best, a 1983 graduate, held the previous mark at 1,176.

Grenci, who added 10 rebounds, scored the historic points in style.

After a steal near midcourt in the second half, she completed a conventional three-point play.

"I'm so happy we won the game," Grenci said. "It was a section game for us and a big win."

Though she saw significant playing time as a freshman, scoring double figures in seven games, Mars' all-time scoring mark was not one of Grenci's goals.

"I never thought I would get it," she said. "It didn't even enter my mind until last year when someone told me I was getting close."

After a great junior campaign, Grenci's game has progressed even further.

"I'm really impressed with the improvements she's made," Planets coach Tony Howard said. "She's more of a threat from the perimeter."

The Planets are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in section play.
