JACKSON TWP — Turnovers can give, but they can also take away.

The Seneca Valley boys basketball team experienced both ends of the spectrum Wednesday night.

The Raiders committed four turnovers in overtime, including two in the final 25 seconds in a 57-56 home loss to Oliver.

The final turnover came after Anthony Roberts missed two free throws that would have given the Bears a three-point lead.

The Raiders grabbed the rebound and had a 3-on-2 advantage when the ball sailed out of bounds on an errant pass with 1.2 seconds left.

"We've got to get the kids to understand that every possession counts," said SV coach Victor Giannotta.

It was turnovers that helped Seneca Valley (1-2) get back into the game.

Trailing the Bears 38-25 at halftime, SV used 11 second half turnovers by Oliver to win the second half by a score of 27-14.

Matt Vogt's rebound and putback with 20 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 52.

Oliver had a chance to take the lead, but DeVaughn Copeland missed the front end of a 1-and-1. SV rebounded, but was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer and the game went into overtime.

Dan Rohm's 3-pointer with 2:41 left in the extra period gave the Raiders a brief 55-54 lead.

But the Bears (2-2) received a free throw and a two-point bucket from Copeland to take the lead for good.

"To come in here and get a win against a good team and a good coach, it means a lot for us," said Oliver coach Carey White.

"We came back in the second half," said Giannotta. "But moral victories don't count on the scoreboard.

"You can't play well for 10 minutes and expect to win a game," he added. "We have to play well for a full 32 minutes. But this was a good experience for us."

SV's C.J. Brown led all scorers with 19 points, while Nate Herrmann added 15 for the Raiders.

The Bears featured four players with at least nine points, led by Evan Schell's 14.

"We expect to have that balanced scoring," said White. "We preach to the team about selfish vs. unselfish play. We feel that if we play unselfish defense, that will lead to a lot of different players scoring for us."

The Raiders will open up Section 3-AAAA action Friday by hosting Central Catholic.
