Early demise
BUTLER TWP — Lea Roth tried to spark Butler County Community College, but it was Jamestown's Brittany Rounds who caught fire.
Rounds sank five 3-pointers during a 25-2 run to close out the first half as the Jaguars rolled to a 62-40 women's basketball victory over the Pioneers Wednesday.
"She's our shooter nonstop," said Jamestown coach Justin Frisbee. "It's a nice weapon to have, with her out there for the 3-ball. It's great for momentum."
That's precisely what Rounds gave the New York team, which held a 14-10 lead following a pair of 3-pointers by Roth with 10:05 remaining in the first half.
However, two baskets by Stacie Lee, then a steal and score by Justina Preston gave Jamestown back its 10-point lead.
But that was just the beginning, as the Jaguars scored the final 16 points of the half to surge to a 39-12 lead at the break.
Rounds finished with a game-high 23 points with six treys, including four in a row over a six-minute span late in the half.
"We had a lot of open looks and I thought the girls did a nice job moving it around and getting good looks," said BC3 coach Sean Carroll. "We just missed some bunnies and then the snowball gets bigger and bigger and you're staring at a 27-point deficit.
"Pam (Gagen), Lindsey (Peters) and Kristen Gagen can create things and you saw that in the second half, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole. It was not from a lack of effort, just lack of execution,"Carroll added.
BC3 (1-5) did come out strong in the second half, dropping in the first nine points on a Pam Gagen basket and a pair of Roth 3-pointers sandwiched around a free throw by Katie Weibel to trim the deficit to 39-21. but the Pioneers could pull no closer.
"Our shots were falling at first," said Frisbee, "but we had a lot of rim-outs, especially early in the second half. But we kept playing defense."
Lee added 19 points for the Jaguars (3-4) while Roth led BC3 with 14 points and Pam Gagen added eight points. The Pioneers did outscore Jamestown 28-23 in the second half, but Carroll admitted the damage had already been done.
"You feel better coming off the court after that type of second half," said Carroll. "It's a learning experience."
