BLT's comedy gets big laughs
Audiences will get a bang out of "U.T.B.U." (Unhealthy To Be Unpleasant), the latest offering by the Butler Little Theatre which opens tonight. The comical tale is full of interesting and well played characters.
Dave Neuhart played the blind William Uggims expertly. His facial expressions and his physical comedy were spot on.
Despite his unusual mission, the audience could relate to his audacity and passion for ridding the world of unpleasant people. His methods are not recommending for cranky or annoying holiday guests.
His prime target, J. Francis Amber, played by Dean Weiland, was so rude and unpleasant the audience most likely will root for Uggims' success. The role, a departure for Weiland who typically plays easy going types, showed a different side to the actor. His irreverence and greed were well acted.
Normally on stage in musical theater, Weiland held is own during his dark comedic performance.
The target of Amber's rage was his mother, Shirley Amber, played by Bonnie Cahill, who took to the boards with gusto and did her share of scene stealing. Cahill portrayed a 94 -year-old curmudgeon who was being bullied by her son for money. From dementia to desperation and to drunkenness, Cahill expertly maintained her character and was thoroughly enjoyable with chuckles abounding in the audience.
Also sharing in the plot and the fun was Alison Carey, who portrayed Amber's hopeful niece who also worked for her cranky uncle. Carey did justice to the role although her constant pouting in a couple scenes was a bit much. She was believable in her chemistry with the other actors on stage.
Also a surprise treat was Linda Anschuetz, who played the companion/maid, Connie Tufford. She was hysterical. The role was well written, and for the most part, she delivered. Her relationship with J. Francis was most enjoyable.
A brief appearance by Terri Schultz as Valerie Rogers and by Emily Fellenz as her client contributed to an entertaining scene. Schultz, as always, nailed the comedy with her timing and her facial expressions.
The husband and wife team of Gary and Sue Collar did a fabulous job with casting this show and comprised a remarkable cast who were delightful and entertaining at the preview showing.
The Collars were in the production 30 years ago and were excited to bring it to a new audience. Their efforts did not disappoint.
