PITTSBURGH — A church will resume housing homeless people after reaching a court-approved agreement with borough officials who sought to stop the arrangement.

The First Apostles' Doctrine Church in Brookville, saying it was following the Bible's teaching, had allowed homeless people to stay at the parsonage for the past few years.

Officials in Brookville, about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, recently cited the church for violating a zoning code and effectively shut down the ministry, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania.

The ACLU sued the borough on the church's behalf Monday, claiming it violated the church's religious beliefs.

The parties reached an agreement Tuesday. On Wednesday, Chief U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose signed an order allowing the church to immediately resume housing up to eight homeless people and two staffers.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher will deliver the fall commencement address at North Carolina State University, his alma mater.The ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 17 at the RBC Center in Raleigh.Cowher, currently an analyst for CBS Sports' "The NFL Today," led the Steelers in 2005 to their first Super Bowl title in 26 years. In 1995, at age 38, he became the youngest head coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl when the Steelers played the Dallas Cowboys.He spent 15 years with Pittsburgh before retiring in 2006. He also played in the NFL from 1979 to 1984.

PITTSBURGH — A city-county authority has plans for an $8.5 million riverfront park in Pittsburgh. The plan is being described as the "missing link" to a continuous recreation trail along the southern shore of the Allegheny River.Currently, the trail is interrupted by a gap that runs roughly from the city's Strip District, an open-air market place during the day that's also home to several night clubs and restaurants, to Point State Park.The park would extend the trail through that area and include a platform that would extend about 25 feet into the water where boats could dock. The Sports & Exhibition Authority has most of the funds for the park, but still needs about $2.3 million.The area is now a mostly inaccessible concrete shoreline.
