Lighter play sparks blaze
JACKSON TWP — Three juveniles playing with a lighter were the cause of a late Saturday night fire that destroyed a bedroom of a home on Nickle Road near the Seneca Valley School District campus.
The fire broke out at 11:47 p.m. Saturday at 154 Nickle Road and was quickly contained by firefighters.
"The fire was caused by juveniles who were attending a sleepover and were playing with a lighter and body spray causing a fire, which began under the bed in the bedroom where they were staying," said township Police Chief Len Keller.
"At the time of the fire, the three juveniles and the homeowner, Nellie Cahall, were in the residence and were able to get out uninjured."
The Harmony Volunteer Fire Company, along with Harmony EMS and the township police, responded.
Fire crews were there for about two hours.
Fire Chief Tim Sapienza said the fire was contained to the bedroom and caused about $5,000 damage to the interior of the room, the bed, a television and a computer.
"It was a quick stop by my guys. They did a nice job to keep the damage to a minimum," Sapienza said. "They're (the home's occupants) very lucky."
The homeowner has insurance, he said.
