Family Pops features music for generations
The Butler County Symphony Orchestra, in its "Diamond Jubilee" 60th season, will present its second concert of the season, a Family Pops Concert, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium at Butler Intermediate High School, 551 Fairground Hill Road.
The symphony is under the direction of Elisabeth Heath Charles.
"Generational Gems" will feature music for a variety of tastes, from big band and music of the 1950s to TV music and music from the Video Game "Halo."
Featured will be Michael Miles, who will play banjo and guitar and sing. He will perform classic banjo, fiddle and Beatles-era music.
Miles grew up in Chicago in an Irish family, where music was served like dinner: Everyone had some. His blue collar father played the player piano and filled the house with singing. Everyone read. Everyone sang.
The orchestra will evoke memories with Leroy Anderson's "The Typewriter." The typewriter in this selection will be "played" by Janet Black, administrative assistant in the symphony office.
This is a full-length concert, not a short one like family pops concerts the symphony has presented in the past.
The concert is supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania's General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
