GROVE CITY — "Texas Chainsaw Massacre?" No sweat.

"Psycho?" No big deal.

"Saw V?" Yawn.

When it comes to scary movies, nothing put a fright into Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell quite like film of Erie Cathedral Prep.

"We have to keep the ball away from them," Bell said. "Their quarterback, their running backs, they have three or four receivers who can all flat out fly. It's scary."

Bell, though, hopes to put a fright into the Ramblers with some old-fashioned water torture — slow and methodical — when the two teams meet in the first round of the District 10 Class AAA playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at SlipperyRock University.

"We can't miss tackles," Bell said. "If we do, they're gone."

Cathedral Prep (6-4) was the fourth-place team out of Region 6, but its four losses came against teams with a combined record of 34-8.

The Ramblers also took on two powerhouse programs from Ohio: Cleveland St. Edwards and Columbus St.Francis de Sales.

Playing a challenging nonleague schedule is nothing new for Prep, which traditionally seeks out other Catholic schools in the region to play against.

"When you play better competition, hopefully it makes you better," said Cathedral Prep coach Don Holl. "We're always felt that. You find out what you are made of."

The Ramblers are made of speed and more speed. And Holl isn't afraid to rock the boat.

At midseason, Holl made a bold move by replacing starting quarterback Patrick Barber with Shyquan Pullium.

Barber didn't have bad numbers, but Pullium was a playmaker who Holl coveted at quarterback in his spread offense. Pullium hasn't disappointed, rushing for 721 yards and 11 touchdowns and passing for 445 yards, five scores and zero interceptions.

"The goal is to always get the ball into your best athletes' hands," Holl said. "(Pullium) brings a lot of different skills and we were trying to get the ball in his hands as much as possible. The easiest way, we decided, was to put him at quarterback where he can get the ball on every play."

While Cathedral Prep's offense is built on finesse and speed, Grove City's attack is as blue collar as it comes.

With a running back duo of Casey Shay and Dwayne Martin churning out more than 1,700 yards this season, the Eagles will try to control the ball and the clock.

"Coach Bell does a nice job with his game plan," Holl said. "I wouldn't call their offense boring, but it is very methodical and it's very effective stuff. They are good at staying on schedule. We need to get them off schedule."

Grove City's schedule was empty last week. The Eagles had a bye, which gave Bell and his team an extra week to prepare for Prep.

"We've (had a bye before the playoffs) for the last I don't know how many years," Bell said. "Our kids enjoyed it. We gave them a couple of days off and we practiced Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week. It can help you or it can hurt you."

Bell certainly hopes it helps his team.

What won't help the Eagles is falling behind early. The game could come down to who gets off to the fastest start.

"They are a lot better equipped to score points and come back than we are," Bell said. "If we get down by two or three scores, it's going to be a long night."
