Lifesteps will posthumously honor John J. Chiprean Sr. for his civic and community contributions through its annual Star Award at the Star Gala Nov. 15 at the Atrium in Prospect.

Accepting the award for the late Butler resident will be Carol Chiprean Keller and children.

Chiprean will be recognized for his years of service to Lifesteps and 61 years with the Rotary club of Butler.

Then known as the Butler County Crippled Children's Society, he helped to provide services to children with polio and was active in the Rotary's annual pancake festival.

Chiprean served as the honorary chairman for Lifesteps' Building the Spirit Capital Campaign in the early 1990s from which proceeds helped to build the agency's program facility on New Castle Road.

He also received the Easter Seal Society Brace for an Ace Award.

Chiprean, a 57-year proprietor of Miller's Shoes in Butler, also served for 25 years on the Community Development Corporation, helping to spearhead ventures for the county with businesses like American Hardware, later known as ServiStar.

He served the Rotary club as a past-president and district governor.

He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church and served as choir director for 16 years.

After many years of service and philanthropy, Chiprean died in 1995.
