SV golfer leads PIAA tourney
Matt Vogt is 18 holes away from a state championship.
The Seneca Valley senior golfer shot a 2-under-par 69 Monday in the first round to take his place atop the leaderboard at the PIAA individual golf championship at Heritage Hills Country Club in York.
The wait to play in his first PIAA event became even longer because of a two-hour frost delay.
"I wasn't really nervous, just standing there waiting, more bored and cold," said Vogt. "Once I started, yeah, I was a little nervous. But I settled in after a while."
Vogt's first round included four birdies and a pair of bogeys.
One stroke behind Vogt is Lancaster Mennonite senior David Denlinger.
Today, Vogt and Denlinger will tee off at 10:20 a.m., along with Erie Cathedral Prep senior Gregor Orlando (+1) and Council Rock North sophomore Brandon Dalinka (+2).
"I've never been in this situation before, so I don't know what to feel," he said.
But give this much to Vogt: he knows how to spend the night before a possible state title.
"I'm going to my room, take a shower and watch the (Monday night) football game," he said.
