"That school's pretty far away."

Knoch boys soccer coach Doug Wood admits he doesn't know much more than that about Mount Pleasant.

But thanks to the Knights winning the Section 2-AA crown, the Vikings will be the team hitting the road for a WPIAL first-round playoff game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Knoch Stadium.

Knoch's section title is its first since 2005, when the Knights fell to Moon in the first round.

The Vikings carry an 8-9 overall record into the game. The team placed third in Section 1-AA with a record of 8-4 behind Indiana (12-0) and Burrell (8-4).

Mount Pleasant, which is located in southern Westmoreland County, was 0-5 in nonsection games against Greensburg Central Catholic, Ringgold, South Park, Southmoreland and Latrobe, and was outscored 14-3.

Knoch's top goal scorers include senior Adam Sharbaugh (14 goals) and Kevin Wood (8 goals), but the team also received solid offensive play from several other players, including juniors Travis Tasker and Quinten Panger.

Spearheading a solid defense are seniors Jordan Kennedy and Mike Hook.

"They're two of our captains," said Vikings coach Doug Wood. "They both have a lot of experience and control the defensive side very well."

Junior Cullen Hinderliter is the starting goalkeeper.

"With each game, he's becoming more confident, and that's important for his position" said Wood.

The Knights (13-1-1) dethroned last year's Section 2-AA champion, Mars.

But the Planets (13-2-2) are still very much in the picture after placing second in the section.

Mars hosts Hopewell (11-6-1) in the second game of a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Saturday.

In the first game at 4 p.m., the Mars girls will host Hopewell in a Class AAA first-round tilt.

One thing the Planets boys have going for them is the wealth of experience they gained in the playoffs a year ago.

Mars lost to Center in the WPIAL semifinals, but won a third-place consolation match over South Park and earned a spot in the state playoffs.

Wins over North East, Center and Susquehannock landed the Planets in Hershey for the state title game before losing to Palmyra.

"We are more confident this year because we know we're capable of getting that far," said Mars coach Chris Knauff. "We don't plan on adjusting to teams. We want to make them adjust to us."

Hopewell's boys placed third in Section 4-AA behind Center and Blackhawk.

Note: Seneca Valley's girls, champions of Section 2-AAA with an overall record of 16-2 and winners of last year's WPIAL title, received a bye in the first round. The Raiders will face the winner of Saturday's game between Chartiers Valley and Canon-McMillan at 6 p.m. Tuesday at NexTier Stadium.
