HARRISBURG — The number of Pennsylvania voters is still rising, and the record registration total now stands at nearly 8.7 million.
The deadline for registering to vote in next month's presidential election was Oct. 6, but many counties are still catching up on last-minute registrations. Figures released Monday showed 4.4 million Democrats, 3.2 million Republicans and slightly more than 1 million independents and members of minor political parties registered to cast ballots in the Nov. 4 election.
The previous record of 8.4 million voters was set in 2004.
PITTSBURGH — All Henry Schwartz has left of his garage and the family 'heirlooms' he was saving is an empty lot and a pile of debris in a landfill.A week ago, city workers mistakenly demolished his garage, thinking it was one of the abandoned buildings they were ordered to bulldoze.Schwartz said the garage was filled with family treasures, including a collection of Billie Holiday records, crystal stemware and a windup Victrola record player. He has not offered an estimate on the value of the items, but calls them his "family heirlooms."Pittsburgh's demolition manager Paul Loy said the garage appeared to be abandoned along with the two condemned homes it sat between. He said Schwartz should file a claim for damages with the city.
Second arrest made in family bomb casePITTSBURGH — Police have arrested an alleged accomplice of a suburban Pittsburgh teenager jailed on charges he tried to kill family members with homemade chemical bottle bombs.Eighteen-year-old Thomas Moore of South Park, faces conspiracy and other charges for allegedly transporting chemicals and bomb-making materials for 16-year-old Christopher Janney, of South Fayette.Janney is charged as an adult on attempted homicide and related charges, though his attorney is trying to move the case to juvenile court.
