ADAMS TWP — Maybe the Mars football squad was revved up because of homecoming.

Then again, maybe it was because it was just another game on the schedule.

The Planets (5-2 overall, 2-1 section) welcomed Hampton (1-6, 1-2) into their home stadium for an old-fashioned physical beating as Mars rolled to a 42-7 victory Friday night.

The Planets collected 278 yards on the ground and dominated the line of scrimmage.

"We had a lot of big plays" said Mars football coach Scott Heinauer. "Last year, we lived off the big play, and tonight was the same."

Mars dominated the ground game even without Shane Kaclik, who was out with an injury, but it had plenty of big plays without its leading rusher.

The Planets got started with a 70-yard kickoff return to the Hampton 20 before converting on a fourth-down play and scoring two snaps later on a 3-yard touchdown run by Austin Miele.

It didn't take long for the Planets to pierce end zone on their next possession. This time, quarterback John Brake found Corey Slater for a 75-yard scoring pass.

The Planets chose to travel by ground for the rest of the game.

Miele scored from 28 yards out to give Mars a 21-0 lead and then Kevin Randolph made the most of his first carry when he rumbled 83 yards for a score to give the Planets a 28-0 halftime lead.

It only got worse for Hampton.

The Talbots fumbled the kickoff to start the second half, and, on third-and-23, Randolph sprinted 44 yards for the score to give Mars a 35-0 lead.

Randolph rushed for 127 yards on two carries in the game.

"(Randolph) ran hard tonight," Heinauer said. "He's a physical kid and I'm proud of him."

Mars had a lot more to be proud of in the second half.

Miele scored his third touchdown of the game on a 61-yard run that gave the Planets a 42-0 lead.

Mars also had some big plays on defense.

The Planets secondary intercepted Hampton quarterback Jeff Cully three times in the game. Chris Herold had two of the picks and Garrett Smith snatched the other.
