Postal Preparation

Workers on Oct. 1, 1968, remove the debris of buildings demolished at South Main and East Wayne streets in Butler to make way for the new post office. Note the Nixon Hotel in the background. For decades the Nixon was a show place that provided shelter for tycoons and dignitaries, including "Diamond Jim" Brady and John F. Kennedy, who visited the hotel during his 1960 campaign. The city's Redevelopment Authority bought and demolished the building in 1975. Butler businessman William Morgan then bought the property and built the Morgan Center on the site.
