Butler’s Nicolette Hladik battles for position Saturday night against Elizabeth Forward duringthe Golden Tornado’s 1-0 non-section girls soccer victory.

While the Central Catholic Cross Country Invitational is running in Allegheny County's Schenley Park, Butler County runners made themselves feel at home on Saturday.

For instance:

• Seneca Valley's Cam Stauffer finished first overall in the boys A race.

• Slippery Rock won the team portion of the boys B race.

• Knoch's Jolene Kunkel finished second overall in the girls A race. Also, three Knights runners broke the top 20 to give the squad a runner-up finish to Greater Latrobe.

Stauffer, a senior, edged out Canon-McMillan's Matt Gregory with a time of 15 minutes, 55.5 seconds, winning by 1.5 seconds. The Raiders finished in fifth place in the Boys A race with 204 points.

Mt. Lebanon won the team competition with 81 points, ahead of runner-up North Hills (87). Butler finished in eighth place with 223 points while Knoch was 12th with 310 points.

The Raiders' Alex Mascio was 34th (17:00.3) and Andrew Razanauskas was 35th (17:00.6) to also pace the squad.

Butler's Evan Gomez was eighth (16:18.4) while teammates Grant Baron and Lance Dugger were 38th and 39th, respectively with identical 17:05.0 times.

Knoch's Brian Tackett was 19th 16:35.5) and teammate Owen Venesky was 33rd (17:00.1) to key the Knights' performance.

The Rockets, with 65 points, prevailed over runner-up Moon (73), a Class AAA team.

Jacob Spurk finished fourth overall with a time of 17:20, followed by teammates Owen Bowser (7th, 17:31), Jackson Udy (12th, 18:03), Ryan Thompson (14th, 18:04), Cal Spigler (31st, 18:43), Alex Flecker (36th, 18:49) and Luke Shaffer (46th, 19:02).

"We had finished second so many years," said Slippery Rock coach Tony Consbruck. "Four of our runners finished in the top 14."

In the girls A race, Knoch sophomore Jolene Kunkel was second (18:40.9), Alyssa Kunkel was eighth (19:17.0), Shannon Evanchek 19th (19:57.6) and Emilee Hertweck 46th (20:40.2) to give the Knights a runner-up finish with 126 points behind champion Greater Latrobe (64), who had all five of its runners place in the top 26.

Butler finished in sixth place with a score of 238 thanks in part to Ashton Dolan (14th, 19:45.4) and Ashley Crawford (23rd, 20:02.9) while Seneca Valley's Megan Powell placed fourth overall with a time of 18:49.3.

In the girls B race, Slippery Rock finished fifth despite missing two of its top three runners.

Rachel Richter was 11th overall (21:38), followed by Susa Timko (30th, 22:53), Kayla Brendlinger (31st, 22:59), Andrea Shaffer (33rd, 23:09), Alexis Reeher (36th, 22:25), Katie Broznec (42nd, 23;39) and Sarah Grabner (43rd, 23:41).

<B>Butler 2, Hampton 1 — </B>Jake Gamble tallied both goals off assists by Matt Slamecka and Blake McChesney in this section matchup Saturday.

<B>Butler 1, Elizabeth-Forward 0 — </B>Sam Rossi scored the game's lone goal off a Mackenzie Hohn helper Saturday. Taylor Troyan made five saves in earning the shutout.
