Tour visits horse complex, winery

On Oct. 4, the 11th annual Butler County Farm Tour visits a winery and equestrian complex for the first time and reacquaints visitors with a pair of the first farms ever featured on the tour.

The drive-it-yourself event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with stops at three Butler locations and one in Cabot.

This year's featured farms are:

• Rustic Acres Winery, 234 Crisswell Road, Butler — Although it only opened in 2005, Rustic Acres' wines have taken home multiple awards from both the Keystone Wine Competition and the Big Butler Fair. Owner Gary Matson has been making wine for more than 20 years.

• Henderson Equestrian Complex, 504 Bullcreek Road, Butler — The 100-acre spread operated by the Henderson family will offer demonstrations on the farm's numerous breeds and tours.

• Har-Lo Farms, 505 West Jefferson Road, Butler — Harold Foertsch and family exclude almost nothing on their 1,250 acres. Visitors can learn about farm machinery as well as corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and the recently added Pennsylvania Simply Sweet Onion. Children can compete in the pedal tractor pull.

• Thiele Dairy Farm, 753 N. Pike Road, Cabot — Family owned since 1868, Edward Thiele's dairy farm will teach visitors what has changed in milk production, and why it's getting more expensive, in addition to hands-on learning opportunities in the Mobile Ag Science Lab.
