Leo K. O'Neil, 80, of Butler died early Tuesday morning at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot.

He was born March 30, 1928, in Butler.

A 1947 graduate of Butler High School, he served in the Navy during the Korean War. In 1958, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering.

A professional engineer, Leo retired in 1991 as senior vice president of R.B. Shannon and Associates at its Kittanning office.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.

An active member and usher at St. Paul Catholic Church in Butler, Leo also was a member of the VFW Post 249 in Butler. He had been a member of the Butler Area Sewer Authority Board for 19 years and was a longtime member of the Calvary Cemetery Board of Directors.

He was an active golfer and enjoyed helping people in many ways as well as photography, traveling and gardening. Leo will be deeply missed by his loving family and the many friends whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy A. Gillespie O'Neil, whom he married Sept. 20, 1952. Also surviving are three daughters and eight grandchildren, Suzanne Brody and her husband, Dr. Mark Brody, and their children, Shannon, David and Jennifer, all of Jefferson Hills; Allison Braun her husband, William Braun, and children, Trevor and Michael Braun, all of Worthington; and Pamela Smyth and her husband, Dr. Duane Smyth, and their children, Kevin, Grant and Hunter Smyth, all of Mount Lebanon. Additionally, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret (John) Cottrill of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Patricia (Elmer) Wagner of Butler; and Sugar, his faithful dog.

<B>O'NEIL</B> — Friends of Leo K. O'Neil, who died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St. Entombment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. St. Paul Guild and Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 9:40 a.m. Friday at the church.The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 400 E.
