This 25-square commemorative quilt hangs in the "Pittsburgh at 250" exhibit at the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh in honor of the city's 250th birthday.

PITTSBURGH — In celebration of Pittsburgh's 250th birthday, the Senator John Heinz History Center has unveiled "Pittsburgh At 250," a new display honoring the region's historic anniversary celebrations in 1858, 1908, 1958 and 2008.

Each section of the display includes artifacts and documents from the anniversary celebration set against a panoramic view of the city from that time period. Featured artifacts include commemorative medals and souvenirs, as well as books, programs and special publications.

The exhibit also includes a 5-foot commemorative quilt featuring 25 squares — created during the History Center's annual Quilter's Weekend — honoring landmark organizations, events and Pittsburgh firsts from the past 250 years.

The new display will be on view in the History Center's first floor Great Hall throughout early 2009.

The Senator John Heinz History Center is at 1212 Smallman St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except holidays. Regular admission includes both the History Center and Sports Museum and is $9 for adults, $7 for senior citizens older than 61, $5 for students with ID and for children ages 6 to 18, and free for children younger than 6.
