SLIPPERY ROCK — Toss out that defensive game plan from a week ago.

Fort LeBoeuf and Oil City couldn't be more different.

The Slippery Rock High football team contained Fort LeBoeuf last week, blanking the Bison and their deliberate, run-oriented offense 35-0.

But when the Rockets travel to Oil City for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night, what they will find is an offensive attack in stark contrast to the one they saw in the season opener.

And it's as potent as it is diverse.

"They do a nice job," said Slippery Rock coach Clyde Conti. "They run some power football, they counter real well, they do play-action, they do a number of different things you have to be ready for.

"They are not afraid to throw it on any down."

Oil City rolled up 400 total yards and 20 first downs in a 35-27 loss to Meadville Saturday.

Junior quarterback Steve May attempted 32 passes and threw for 249 yards. His favorite target, 6-foot-5, 220-pound behemoth of a tight end Ben Koyack, caught six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

While the Oilers showed off their talent, they also showed their youth.

OilCity committed nine penalties, lost a key fumble and also had several breakdowns on special teams.

All added up to a disappointing loss.

"We did some things well, but not enough," said first-year OilCity coach Matt LaVerde. "We're very young. We have sophomores and juniors starting across the board. They made some great plays, but they also made some key mistakes."

Conti was at Meadville Saturday to watch the game and he came away impressed.

But it wasn't the Oilers' offense that had Conti digging into his playbook for answers. It was the Oil City defense that raised an eyebrow.

"They play with an awful lot of energy," Conti said. "They do a lot of stunting up front.

Slippery Rock did a lot of scoring last week.

The Rockets scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to help break a three-year losing streak in season openers.

"Well, we hadn't won a game in the first week for awhile," Conti said. "Maybe it helped we didn't play Grove City. It's always important to get off to a good start."

Senior quarterback Jono Powell had a big day throwing and running.

Powell gained 183 yards rushing and scored twice and also threw of 77 yards and two more scores.

It didn't take long for LaVerde to see Powell was going to be public enemy No. 1 for his defense.

"He is a very talented quarterback," LaVerde said. "He is so dangerous. You have to try to keep him contained, but that doesn't look like a very easy thing to do."

The Slippery Rock defense did a good job containing everything Fort LeBoeuf had on offense.

Ayron Gallagher recorded nine tackles, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass. The Rockets forced five Bison turnovers in the win.

That may bode well for the Rockets against Oil City, which is sure to challenge the Slippery Rock defense with its multiple offensive looks.

"Everything you do (defensively) is situation-based," Conti said. "You can win with a lot of different styles."
