Awed by Maridon Museum

My daughter and I had the pleasure of visiting the Maridon Museum on North McKean Street. The museum houses the personal art collection of Mary Hulton Phillips.

I had been wanting to go there ever since it opened, but just didn't get there until now. I'm sorry I waited so long.

We were awed by the quality of the pieces on exhibit. The skill and artistry involved in the creation of the jade and ivory sculptures defy description. You do not have to know anything about Asian art to appreciate the detail and the craftsmanship involved. Other art forms were equally impressive.

We were lucky enough to be the only ones in the museum for a time after we arrived and we had the pleasure of being treated to a personal tour by a wonderful gentleman named Elmer. His commentary on the origin and tradition of various items in the exhibit and how they were created added greatly to our enjoyment and to our education.

Those who have not yet visited Maridon need to make a point of doing so. I probably would not take very young children; it would hinder studying and appreciating the exhibits.

I know of no other venue with this quality of artwork that can be visited for only $4 (less for students and seniors), and it's right here in Butler.
