Aviary sets party Saturday to mark lorikeet birthdays
PITTSBURGH — The rainbow lorikeets at the National Aviary are as noisy and inquisitive as when they arrived there in 2007.
A party is planned for Saturday to celebrate their birthdays and the first anniversary of the opening of their interactive exhibit, Lories & Friends.
The day's activities will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a party hosted by Radio Disney, with music, games, crafts and cake. Nectar cups for feeding the lorikeets will be discounted to $1.
Rainbow lorikeets are native to the coastal areas of Australia, where they feed on nectar and pollen from the blossoms of native plants, fruit and insects. They use their sharp, curved beaks to tear at fruit and flowers and work their tongues like a paintbrush to mop up nectar.
Other upcoming events at the aviary is a visit from Dora the Explorer and her cousin Diego, heroine and hero of the Nick Jr. television, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 30 and 31.
Children younger than 7 may wear their backpacks and participate in an interactive scavenger hunt for stars inside the aviary.
Lorikeet and Dora events are included in the general admission ticket, which is $9 for adults; $8 for senior citizens; $7.50 for children age 2 and older; and free for those younger than 2. Senior citizens age 60 and older are admitted for half price Mondays year-round.
