SLIPPERY ROCK — Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran, a junior sprinter at Slippery Rock University, is one of 17 Rock track and field athletes to receive all-academic honors from the U.S. Track andField and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Other SRU women receiving honors were Nicole Blaesser, Crystal Burnick, Emily Bush, Jennifer Hansen, Jen Harpp, Abby McKissick, Jessica Sackin, Amanda Seigworth, Allison Smith, Tiffany Tedesco and Raissa Weiss.
SRUmen making the grade were Nate Hardic, Pat Reagan, Mike Rose, Jimmy Schneider and Jeff Weiss.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade point average and meet the NCAADivision IIindoor or outdoor automatic or provisional standards.
MERIDIAN— The Meridian Blue 7- and 8-year-old baseball all-star team won the Meridian tournament recently.Team members include Ryan Lynn, Michael Zirpoli, Justin Stewart, Jacob Herrit, Devin Hayward, Colby Anderson, Luke Patten, Kevin King, Luke Michalek, John Michalek, Josh Albert and Cole Thompson.Coaches are Dan Lynn, Dan Michalek, Craig Stewart, Mike Zirpoli, Kurt Albert and Josh Herrit.
TORRINGTON, Conn. — Slippery Rock University catcher-first baseman Matt Adams was named to the Southern Division roster for the New England Collegiate Baseball League's all-star game.Playing first base for the Pittsfield (Mass.) Dukes, Adams is hitting .340 with four home runs and a league-leading 27 RBI. His team is leading the Southern Division.
SLIPPERY ROCK— Prospect outfielder Travis McDougall and East Butler catcher Ryan Geibel advanced to the Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball East-West All-Star Game after their performances Tuesday at the All-West Game at Critchfield Park.The East-West Game is Aug. 2 in Harrisburg. McDougall and Geibel are two of 21 players advancing from the All-West gathering.The All-West Game featured 56 players in all.
BELLE VERNON — Matt Vogt of Cranberry Township carded a 70 and won the boys ages 17-and-18 division on the first playoff hole of the Kings Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament Tuesday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.Vogt's score was 1-under-par. He was tied with Nathan Sainovich after 18 holes.
