John Patrick "Jack" Zarnick, 78, of Arlington, Wash., passed away Sunday at his home after a short battle with cancer.

Jack was born July 16, 1929, in Butler, to John Patrick and Mabel Ann Zarnick. He was the sixth child of a family of 10.

Jack served in the U.S. Naval Service from 1946 to 1948. He moved to California in 1950, where he worked as a meat cutter for more than 35 years.

He met the love of his life Beverly "Ann" Zarnick while working at Safeway in Southern California. They married Nov. 26, 1960, at a beautiful evening ceremony. They spent most of their life raising their two children in Santa Rosa, Calif. In 1988 they retired and moved to Jack's hometown of Butler to be closer to his family. They enjoyed retirement, traveling and spending winters in Florida.

In 2004 Jack and Ann made their final move to Arlington, Wash., to be closer to their granddaughters. Unfortunately nine months later Ann passed away after battling cancer since 1997, and Jack was devastated.

Jack had been a member of The Shrine, Scottish Rite and recently received his 50-year Masonic pin.

Jack came from a large family and enjoyed golfing with his brothers. He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of family and an appreciation for their history. This was passed down to him from his mother who raised him and nine other children after his father died when he was 11.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Jill P. Zarnick of Arlington, Wash.; his son, Timothy M. Zarnick, a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Zarnick, two granddaughters, Allison Leigh and Grace Elizabeth, all of Everett, Wash.; three brothers, Daniel M., Gene G. and Thomas L. Zarnick, all of Butler; and a sister, Nancy J. Karch of Butler.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly "Ann" Zarnick; his sisters, Linda S. Zarnick and Maritha Kressen, and brothers Richard J., Howard P. and Robert C. Zarnick, all of Butler.
