Harold Stoughton

Stoughton

Harold "Red" Stoughton, 86, of Chicora died at 8:30 a.m. Monday from complications of a series of strokes he suffered after heart problems in June 2007.

He was the son of Cleve and Clara Wolford Stoughton. He was born Sept. 13, 1921, on the farm that had been owned by the family since 1859. He spent his entire life working the farm with his brother, Claire.

Mr. Stoughton was a member of Zion Luthern Church, Chicora.

Harold enjoyed making hay for Moonlight Mushrooms, and he still was operating farm tractors at the sudden onset of his illness. He also enjoyed pumping the numerous oil wells on his farm.

He was employed in previous years by C.G. McCormick, Joe Delano, Pepper Martin, Dorchem, and Wildwood companies as a coal miner

Harold was a novice historian about the Chicora area and it's rich oil history. He took great pride in the fact that his family farm was the site of the Greece City riots of 1873. He was always willing to give anyone interested a guided tour of the site known as Robbers Hollow.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Polly Claypoole Stoughton; a son, Dr. Thomas and his wife, Susan, of Florence, S.C.; a daughter, JoAnn and her husband, Ray Reed, of Deltona, Fla.; and a daughter, Arlene and her husband, John Smith and a son, Lewis and his wife, Stacy, all of Chicora. He also is survived by 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Dean, Carney and Claire; and one grandchild.
