BETHELPARK — Seneca Valley had 14 seconds left to send Saturday night's WPSLADivision 1boys lacrosse championship game into overtime.

It needed about 16.

Raiders sophomore Jake McAndrew tried getting off a shot from 15 feet in front of the net, only to be checked off the play just as time expired.

Mount Lebanon was able to hang on for a 9-8 victory at Bethel Park, claiming its third consecutive league championship.

But it didn't come easily.

"I never felt like we had this game in hand, even with the two-goal lead in the closing seconds," Blue Devils coach Kee Jo Sung said. "We got sloppy at the end and almost blew it."

Mount Lebanon (15-5) seemingly iced the game when Chris White scored an unassisted goal to give his team a 9-7 lead with 26 seconds remaining.

The Raiders took possession on the ensuing faceoff, however. Midfielder Matt Hamill took off down the middle of the field and snapped off a shot past goaltender Will Round, pulling SVwithin 9-8 with 14 seconds left.

Again, the Raiders gained possession and went on the attack. McAndrew, seeking his fourth goal of the game, cut toward the front of the net from the left side of the field.

Three defenders converged on him and jarred the ball loose before McAndrew could get off a shot.

"Another step or two, another second or two ... That's all he needed,"SVcoach Peter Hoffman said. "Their defenders got into him and dislodged the ball. It was a good play by them.

"We didn't have enough time there to set up a play."

Mount Lebanon overcame early deficits of 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3 before grabbing the victory. The Blue Devils trailed 5-4 at halftime, then outscored Seneca Valley 4-0 in the third quarter.

"Our attackers were incredible in that quarter,"Sung said. "They were really aggressive going to the net. That was the difference."

"Our game is ball possession and controlling the flow of the game,"Hoffman said. "They took us out of that during the quarter. We rarely had the ball at all."

The Raiders (14-5) did not register a shot on goal in the third period until more than 10 minutes had elapsed off the clock.

With 35 seconds left in the quarter, SV's Tyler Bond was robbed from point-blank range by goaltender Round.

Trailing 8-5 entering the final 12 minutes, Seneca Valley got back in the game. McAndrew scored his third goal of the night with 8:06 left, while the Raiders had an extra-man advantage.

Hamill scored his second of three goals on a rebound with 6:23 left, after Round stopped a Sam Jarrett shot.

Now down by a goal, the Raiders struggled to regain possession. Mount Lebanon won the faceoff after Hamill's goal and controlled play in the attacking zone until the Blue Devils were called for illegal procedure with 2:12 to play.

"That's when we got a little sloppy,"Sung said. "But Seneca Valley deserves a lot of credit for that. They have a very good team and the culture of lacrosse has arrived there.

"With the size of the school district, they're going to be a threat to win this thing every year."

Seneca Valley won the WPSLADivision 3title in 2003 and the Division 2 crown in 2004. This was the Raiders' first appearance in the Division 1 final.

The Raiders are losing only six seniors from their 27-man roster.

"I'm proud of our guys,"Hoffman said. "We beat the top two seeds (Sewickley and North Allegheny) to get here,"Hoffman said. "The only top team we didn't beat this year was Mount Lebanon."

The Blue Devils defeated the Raiders, 5-4, during the regular season.
